Best eSIM for Canada Travel (2026): Prices, Coverage & Setup

By AeroCell editorial team · Updated October 24, 2026

Heading to Canada? Between airport transfers, ride-shares, Google Maps, and checking trail conditions, you'll use mobile data from the moment you land. Roaming with your home carrier is usually the most expensive way to get it: daily roaming passes of $10–16 turn a two-week trip into a phone bill of well over $100.

A prepaid travel eSIM does the same job for much less. You install it before you fly, and when you land it connects to a Canadian 5G network. This guide covers current AeroCell Canada prices, the difference between standard and Premium plans, coverage, compatibility, and setup.

    Quick answer

For most travelers, the best pick is a 10 GB / 30-day plan at $19.99 on Rogers 5G. That's enough for maps, messaging, social media, and photo uploads on a typical one-to-three-week trip. Light users can get online from $2.99, and long stays or heavy users can go up to 75 GB. Browse the live list on our Canada plans page.

    Canada eSIM plans and prices

    Data Validity Price
    1 GB 7 days $2.99
    3 GB 15 days $7.49
    3 GB 30 days $7.49
    5 GB 30 days $11.49
    10 GB 30 days $19.99
    20 GB 30 days $29.99
    75 GB 30 days $46.99

    What makes these plans travel-friendly:

    • Prepaid, no contract. When the data or days run out, the plan stops. There's no auto-renewal and no Canadian ID or paperwork.
    • Day passes too. If you'd rather have a daily allowance, there are per-day options from 1 GB up to 10 GB a day, including tiers that keep working at reduced speed (1 Mbps) after the day's full-speed data is used.
    • Standard or Premium. Most sizes come in two versions on different networks. More on that below.
    • A Canadian number if you need one. The 75 GB plan includes a local number with calls and texts. See below.

Standard vs Premium: which network should you pick?

Canada has three big networks, and none of them is best everywhere. That's why AeroCell offers two kinds of plan.

    • Standard plans use Rogers 5G. Rogers is Canada's largest network and is strong in the cities where most visitors spend their time: Toronto, Montréal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Québec City, and the main highways between them. For most trips, this is the best value.
    • Premium plans use Bell, Telus, and SaskTel 5G. Your phone can switch between all three. This costs more but helps in places where Rogers is weaker: Saskatchewan (SaskTel's home turf), parts of Manitoba, rural Atlantic Canada, and smaller towns off the main routes.

The simple rule: city trip or classic route, go standard. Prairies, the Maritimes, or a long rural road trip, go Premium.

    Need a Canadian phone number?

Most travel eSIMs are data-only, and for a holiday that's all you need. But if you're staying longer, a local number makes life easier: landlords, banks, employers, and many Canadian sign-up forms expect one.

    The 75 GB / 30-day plan at $46.99 on Telus 5G includes:

    • A Canadian phone number, assigned once you arrive in Canada.
    • Unlimited calls and texts within Canada, including SMS and MMS.
    • 1,000 international minutes to 15 countries: the USA, Mexico, mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
    • 75 GB of high-speed data. After that, data keeps working at a reduced 128 kbps.

Two things to know before you buy. The eSIM can only be installed once: if you delete it from your phone, it can't be reinstalled, so don't remove it until your trip is over. And the plan can't be refunded once purchased. To check your remaining data and minutes, text CHECK to 1888.

It's a good fit for students, working-holiday visitors, and anyone spending a month or more in Canada.

    Coverage: what to expect

Canada is huge, but most of the population lives within a few hundred kilometres of the US border, and that's where coverage is excellent.

    • Cities and suburbs: fast 5G and 4G almost everywhere.
    • Main highways: reliable coverage on the busy stretches of the Trans-Canada Highway, Highway 401 between Windsor and Montréal, and the Sea-to-Sky Highway to Whistler, with short gaps in the mountains.
    • The Rockies and national parks: Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper, and Canmore have good signal in town. Most of the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper has no signal on any network. Download offline maps and tell someone your plans before you set off.
    • The North: Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut have coverage in towns but very little in between. If you're heading that far north, plan for long periods offline.

How much data do you need for a Canada trip?

    Trip style Recommended plan
Weekend city break, light use 1–3 GB
1–2 weeks: maps, messaging, social 5–10 GB
2–4 weeks, or lots of photo and video uploads 20 GB
A month, remote work, or hotspot use 75 GB

Video and hotspotting are the big data users: an hour of HD streaming uses 1.5–3 GB, and tethering a laptop can double your daily usage. Maps, WhatsApp, email, and browsing usually stay under 500 MB a day. If you're between two sizes, go bigger. For a deeper breakdown, see how much eSIM data you need.

eSIM vs roaming vs a Canadian SIM card

Option Typical cost (2 weeks) Setup
AeroCell eSIM, 10 GB $19.99 1 minute, before you fly
Home-carrier roaming pass $140–220 ($10–16/day) none, but billed per day
Canadian prepaid SIM card $40–75 store visit, physical swap

Canadian mobile plans are among the most expensive in the world, and prepaid SIMs for locals are usually sold by the month. A travel eSIM gets you the same networks at prepaid travel prices, while your physical SIM stays in place for calls and texts. Full comparison: eSIM vs roaming.

Traveling from the US? Check your plan first. Many US carriers include Canada roaming, sometimes at reduced speed. If yours doesn't, or the speed is too slow, an eSIM is the cheaper fix.

    Visiting the USA too?

A Canada plan covers Canada only. If your trip crosses the border, for example Niagara Falls, Seattle to Vancouver, or a New England and Québec loop, pick a USA & Canada bundle: one eSIM for both countries, from $3.99. Adding Mexico? A North America bundle covers all three, from $4.00. You'll find both in the Bundles tab on the Canada plans page. Planning the US part of your trip? Read our USA eSIM guide.

Will your phone work in Canada?

    Two requirements:

    1. eSIM support. iPhone XR and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, Google Pixel 3 and newer, plus most recent mid-range models. Dial *#06#: if an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. Full list: does my phone support eSIM.
    2. Carrier-unlocked. A phone locked to your home carrier can't use another network's eSIM. If you bought it outright or finished paying it off, it's usually unlocked. Check with your carrier before you travel.

Canadian networks use the same main bands as the US and Europe, so any modern unlocked eSIM phone will work.

Setting it up: 5 minutes, before you fly

    1. Buy your plan on the Canada plans page. The QR code arrives by email within a minute.
    2. Install over Wi-Fi at home. Tap once in the AeroCell app, or scan the QR code from Settings. Guides: iPhone and Android.
    3. Label it "Canada Travel" so it's easy to find.
    4. When you land, turn the eSIM line on, enable data roaming for the eSIM line only, and set it as your mobile data line.
    5. Keep your home SIM on for calls and texts, with its data roaming off.

Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a Canadian network, not when you buy or install it, so setting it up early costs nothing. If it doesn't connect, our troubleshooting guide fixes the common causes in a few minutes.

    Frequently asked questions

Does the eSIM include a Canadian phone number?

Only the 75 GB / 30-day plan, which includes a Canadian number with unlimited calls and texts in Canada. All other plans are data-only. With those, WhatsApp, iMessage, and FaceTime keep working with your existing number, and your physical SIM still gets regular calls and texts, including bank verification codes.

    Does it work in Québec?

Yes. Coverage in Montréal, Québec City, and along the St. Lawrence is excellent on both standard and Premium plans.

    Can I hotspot my laptop?

Yes, tethering works on all plans, within your data allowance. If you plan to work from your phone's hotspot, go for 20 GB or more.

Can I top up if I run out?

Yes. Buy another plan in the app or your dashboard in seconds.

What if my phone is locked to my carrier?

The eSIM won't be able to connect to Canadian networks. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you leave. For paid-off phones it's usually free and takes a day or two.

    Get connected

A two-week trip to Canada needs about twenty dollars of data, not a hundred and fifty. Pick a plan on the Canada plans page, install it over Wi-Fi before you leave, and land with a working connection. New to eSIMs? Start with what is an eSIM.
